Discover the ins and outs of the Medicare Annual Election Period, running from October 15th to December 7th. Learn how to make the most of your plan changes, understand your options, and find expert guidance.
Hello, everyone! My name is Gary Owen, and I am the president and founder of MedicareJourney.org. Today is October 15th, marking the beginning of a crucial time for Medicare beneficiaries—the Annual Election Period (AEP). This period runs until December 7th, giving you seven weeks to review and make changes to your current Medicare plan.
During the AEP, if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan or a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), you have the opportunity to switch plans. You can move from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another, change from one drug plan to another, or even leave your Medicare Advantage Plan to return to Original Medicare. If you choose to return to Original Medicare, you can also pick up a Medicare Supplement Plan. However, depending on your state, you might need to qualify by answering health underwriting questions for the Medicare Supplement.
One critical piece of information to note is the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter you should have received last month, in September. This letter informs you of any changes to your current plan. Many Medicare beneficiaries find out through this letter that their Medicare Advantage Plan has been terminated. While this might initially seem concerning, it can actually be a golden opportunity—much like the golden ticket from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
If you have received a termination notice, you have a guaranteed issue right to switch to a Medicare Supplement Plan without needing to answer health underwriting questions. This is a significant advantage and can be the perfect time to reassess your healthcare needs and ensure your plan aligns with them.
